New publication: The Data of Mythic Spaces
In this new piece, Greta Hawes and Scott Smith describe the nature of space in Greek myth, and describe how their observations have shaped MANTO.
They emphasise the extraordinarily porous relationship between fictional spaces and historical landscapes, and how the Greeks maintained a high tolerance for plurality and dispute in these stories. They show how they used MANTO to create a data model that reflects and respects these characteristics of ancient storytelling.
The chapter discusses several case studies of mythical space, including the Underworld, and Odysseus’ voyage. These are illustrated by graphics drawn by Anika Campbell.
