Episode 24: Daphne

One of the most famous of all myths is the story of Daphne, the young girl who was Apollo’s first love but who wanted nothing to do with him. Fleeing, she prayed to the gods and was turned into the laurel tree (Greek “daphne”). This is a great example of a metamorphosis myth, where mythical figures were turned into some part of the natural world. The Daphne myth inspired a ton of artistic versions, but none is more famous than the fabulous statue by Bernini.

The myth of Daphne was also commonly shown in antiquity, including in the important ancient city, Antioch.
